僕の自宅には小さな庭があり、そこで野菜を育てています。それぞれの苗が育つには、環境と適度なお世話と愛情が必要です。僕はそれぞれの苗に関心をよせ大事に育てていますが、すべての苗がまったく同じように育つわけではありません。

子どもたちも似たようなものかもしれません。だから、子供は必ずしも僕たちの思い通りになるとは限らないのです。これを事実として受け止めて、それぞれの個性を大事に、それに感謝し、過度な期待をせずに見守ることも大事なのです。

そうすることで、子どもたちは僕たちの期待をはるかに超えて成長する可能性が開けてくると思うのです。

そして多くの場合、嬉しいことに、思っている以上の成長をみせてくれます。

親も先生も、子供たちの世話をしながら、ときどき後ろに下がって、彼らの驚くべき素晴らしい成長を賞賛し、感謝してください。

僕たち先生にできることは、教室という名の庭を耕し環境を整え、教育という名の栄養を与え、愛情をもって接し、子どもたちの可能性を信じて待つことなのだと思います。 

The Classroom is a Garden 

At home I have a small garden, and in it I grow vegetables. Each seedling needs space, water, sunlight and care. Each seedling gets my care and attention equally, but they don’t all grow in exactly the same way. 

Our students are similar. And so they don’t always meet our expectations. Accepting this fact with gratitude actually opens the possibility that they may indeed grow way past our expectations. 

And so often, they do. 

Parents and teachers everywhere, while attending to your children in your garden, occasionally stand back to admire and appreciate their amazing and outstanding growth.
